Don't Work on Vacation...Seriously!

Have you ever come back from vacation feeling more drained than when you left? In today's always-on, digitally connected world, it's become increasingly difficult to truly unplug and reconnect to ourselves. But working on vacation defeats the whole purpose of taking time off - to recharge both mentally and physically from the stresses and strains of daily life. Vacations are a precious opportunity to rest and reset, so that you can show up as your most creative, confident, and caring self, at work, at home and for yourself. Here are some insights and strategies for how to relax and recharge your internal battery, so you can return feeling inspired, motivated and ready to start the new year.

Set Boundaries With Your Colleagues

Before your vacation starts, set clear boundaries. Email your colleagues or clients, informing them that you'll be out of the office and won't be checking your email regularly. Let them know when you’re leaving and when you plan to return, so they understand how long they can expect to wait for answers or assistance from you while you’re away.

Create a To-Do List (aka. Set boundaries for yourself)

Creating a to-do list before you leave for vacation can help ensure that everything is taken care of before you depart. Make sure to include any tasks that need to be completed before you go, as well as any projects and tasks for when you return. This will help you feel more confident about taking time off without worrying about missing something important at work.

Unplug from Technology

Disconnect from technology, both personal and work related, as much as possible. Turn off notifications and resist the urge to check email or social media throughout the day. Leave your laptop and work phone at home, and if that's not possible, turn them off. It's important to enjoy your time off without additional distractions. This will help you redirect your focus to enjoying your time away without the constant ping of work.

Indulge in New Experiences

Don't forget to take advantage of all the new experiences available during your vacation! Visit a local museum or art gallery; try out a new restaurant; attend a cultural festival; go on an outdoor adventure; - whatever it is that interests you! Taking part in new experiences helps open our eyes up to different perspectives and allows us to gain valuable life lessons along the way. Choosing activities that require your full attention helps avoid the temptation of checking your phone and thinking about your to-do list. When we fully engage in an activity, we are present with what is, which can allow us to truly relax and enjoy the moment.

Take Time for Yourself

Make sure to take some time each day just for yourself during your vacation. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or simply taking a few moments of silence, carving out some “me time” will help keep stress levels low by reconnecting to yourself.

Spend Quality Time With Friends & Family

Spending quality time with friends and family is one of the best ways to truly relax and enjoy your vacation days off from work! Take this opportunity to catch up with loved ones, share stories, and create memories that will last a lifetime. Laugh with your friends and family, indulge in delicious meals together, and even try new activities. These are the moments that you'll cherish and remember.

Return Recharged & Refreshed

After all the hard work we put into our jobs every day, sometimes we just need a break. Oftentimes, after periods of deep rest and reflection, we begin to feel energized and motivated again. So enjoy those days off, knowing that when it's time to go back to work again, we'll be ready!

No matter how much work you have, your well-being is more important. You deserve to truly enjoy your time off, and your mind and body will thank you for it. When you're on vacation, remember why you took time off and settle into each moment. Here’s to resting more deeply, both on vacation and throughout the year.
